Allison stood in the backroom of Envy, staring affectionately into a recently-arrived box. It contained the cheap, brightly colored plastic jewelry sold in the store. Allison had always hidden a soft spot for the chunky bracelets and long beaded necklaces that she stocked along the walls of Envy. If she was the type, she would have stolen her weight in plastic bangles every day, but the thought never crossed her mind. She reached into the box and pulled out a handful of necklaces of many colors. They had gotten tangled during shipping, and one of Allison's many tasks today was to separate them from each other before hanging them on the display walls. There was no table in the room, so Allison plunked down onto the floor and began carefully untwisting the tangle of beads. She was engrossed in her work when the door swung open and the cashier, Chris, entered

Chris had work. A five hour shift to be exact. There was no way he'd be able to make it through the entire thing alone. As he stood outside the building he tried to break off the end of the joint so he could save the rest for his break. Dropping some eye drops into his eyes, he walked straight for the back room where he planned to get it together a little before walking out to the cash register. Granted a trained monkey could do his job, Chris didn't really like to give away just how high he was at work.
As the door swung open, something caught his eye. There was a girl sitting on the floor next to a box. Smiling, he mumbled to himself, "Get a fucking chair." As he closed the door behind him and leaned against the wall, something about her became familiar. "Hey! You're that girl I talked to that one time!" His smile grew as he realized who it was. "Allison something-or-other." Sliding down the wall he sat on the floor across the box from her. "How you doin today?"

Allison had slung a few of the beads around her neck as she worked, and they clicked against each other as she looked up to see who entered. She recognized Chris, of course. She frowned, her eyebrows furrowing, as she heard him mumble "Get a fucking chair." Her face lightened when something seemed to click in his head and he said "Hey! You're that girl I talked to that one time!" She gave him a small smile and nodded her head. When he came closer, Allison noticed that he was surrounded by a not entirely unpleasant smokey smell. It was definately not bitter like cigarette smoke, but what else could he have been smoking out back? Allison couldn't place it, and after a moment she mentally shrugged it off; it was probably just his cologne or something.
"Allison something-or-other." Allison nodded at him again, and said, "Shaddix."
"How you doin today?" Allison stopped pulling apart necklaces. She cocked her head to one side as she answered: "I'm pretty good today. I like doing jewelry here." She held up the clumped plastic beads to illustrate her point "How are you?"

"Shaddix. Right. I'll get that eventually. I promise." Chris gave her one of his heart ,elting grins and peered into the box she was attempting to organize. Pulling out a strand of beads, about six more came with it. "Jesus Christ on a fucking pogo stick. This is your job? You untangle these then put them somewhere? I'd quit." Chris shook his head and slowly started to untangle the mess he held in his hands. He may as well pretend to be useful while he ignored his real job.
He remembered her question and looked up at the ceiling. "Today? 'm alright. No. More than alright. I think I'm downright happy." He grinned again and turned back to the mess in his hands. He furrowed his brow as his concentration heightened. "This is certainly an engaging activity." Chris pulled on two of the necklaces that were stuck together and watched them unravel. For lack of anywhere else to put them, he dropped them over his neck and smiled. "I think they suit me nicely. What do you think?"

Allison felt her face getting warm when Chris grinned at her. He was so friendly, and he was pretty cute, too...Was Allison developing another crush?
"Jesus Christ on a fucking pogo stick." The image made Allison let out a snort of laughter. "This is your job? You untangle these then put them somewhere? I'd quit." Allison resumed picking at the clump of beads in her lap. She glanced up when she heard clicking noises and saw that Chris was picking at the cluster of jewelry he had taken out of the box. She smiled and turned back to her own lap.
"I think they suit me nicely. What do you think?" Allison looked up once more and was delighted to see that Chris had looped some necklaces around his neck. He was wearing one pink and one green necklace, Allison's favorite colors, and the colors of the necklaces that she herself was wearing. She pulled at the strands around her own neck. "I like them; We match."
