4:07. Rylan groaned inwardly, his head tilting back in pure disgust. It would be the last time he ever waited around for someone, who matter of fact wasn't even here. Sighing, he fumbled with the keys to his car, debating on whether to head on home, or watch the rest of the football practice. Deciding that he had nothing better to do, the blonde stepped down from the concrete sidewalk, his sneakers now buried in the freshly mowed grass. He walked at an even pace, proceeding toward the specified practicing field for their football team. He kept toward the sidelines, his eyes scanning the players for a moment, silently wishing he was out there again.
Rylan had played football back in his freshman year, and had actually done better than he had in his first year of playing basketball. That was back when he'd been running from his father's opinion, back when he joined the football team just to get him off his back. In actuality, it had only made it worse. Richard made every game that Rylan played, and actually made an effort to get to know his son a little better. He'd been the quarterback of the team the entire year, and surprisingly survived without any injuries. No one could picture the freshman sized Rylan on the field, because back then he was insanely thin, and was just a wiry looking person. What blew them all away though, was the fact that all his weight had been muscle, so he proved to be able to hold his own.
With a light nod to the coach, who was pacing the sidelines, he climbed into the second row of the metal bleachers. A couple guys greeted him briefly, a look of surprise cast over their features. Rotating his shoulders back, he let himself relax while watching the drills and various maneuvers the boys preformed on the grass. He silently wondered how his life might have turned out if he hadn't gone back to playing basketball. Sighing once more, he ran his fingers through his hair, his attention now completely focused on the guys crashing into each other in front of him. How would football have changed his life? Would it be better? Or perhaps worse?

Hike!
That was his cue. Sawyer's eyes, one blue and one brown, shot to the second string quarterback, who was holding the ball. As he turned around, Sawyer ran forward, his path slanted a little to the right. He held both hands out. The whole motion took a mere second. The ball switched from the quarterback's hands to his, as he grabbed it, holding the pigskin close to his chest. His right hand had an iron grip on the ball, while his left hand shielded it. He could feel the adrenaline pumping inside of him. His eyes scanned what was in front of him. In his sights were offensive and defensive lineman, shoving each other with all the strength they could muster, in order to attain their goal; to create holes for him to run through, or to tackle him. In his ears, the voice of their head coach could be heard.
Go, Sawyer, go!
It all came naturally for the boy. His sharp eyesight found an opening, barely a foot wide. Immediately he blasted through, keeping his shoulders low. In his mind, he was invincible. Nothing could stop him. This was his game. The play was made for him, nobody else. One step, and he was already running through four linemen, two on each side, shoving the other. The second step brought him past them. Now he was clear of the linemen. The linebackers were next. Hop-stepping to the left, he dodged an oncoming tackler, pushing him aside with a hand as he ran right through. That was it. The two other linebackers were stranded metres away, getting through the mess of the linemen in their way.
He had it. The touchdown was his for the making. A mere twenty yards left. Fifteen. Ten. Everyone else was just watching him now; they knew perfectly well that once he was past the linebackers, he was gone. As he ran through the goal line, Sawyer slowed down, tossing the ball to the ground. It sure as hell probably looked good to everyone else, but to him, it wasn't a big thing. That was his talent. Taking off his mud-covered helmet, he held it by the mask, as he walked back to the bleachers. A couple of high-fives, knuckles, slaps on the back, and a compliment from the coach. Nodding modestly, he proceeded to take a seat. It was Rylan Avery right beside him.
"How'd I look," he asked, taking deep, long breaths. The play might've only lasted a mere nine seconds, but in that nine seconds, he'd just used up a lot of energy. "When I got past the linemen, how'd I look? Did it look too messy?" He wasn't asking to show off. Sawyer was looking for Rylan's opinion. He was a quarterback, after all.

Rylan's attention focused on the quarterback, the signal sounded, and he watched as their bodies collided, but one person's figure shot from the mass. His hands were completely outstretched, the look on his face determined to grasp his needy fingers around the ball. Forced to squint his eyes as the boy began shoving those in his path, he strained to see both the number and name on the back of his jersey. Collins. Of course, he'd been to a couple of games with Beth, one who tended to narrated her brother's current stats. He'd always liked the boy, and found him to be strikingly similar to himself, which was probably the reason for them getting along well for the slight difference in ages. All the while that he was thinking, his eyes were glued to Sawyer, memorizing his movements, and the accuracy it took to complete them. He had to admit, the kid was good, damn good to be exact.
The coach was screaming out instructions, and once in a while leaned down to a younger boy on the bench and explained what another had done wrong, even the slightest thing. His attention Rylan noticed wasn't on Sawyer at all, it was on the other guys on Sawyer's side. It was almost like the coach knew that he'd make it to the touchdown zone, which by the looks of it, the other team didn't stand a chance. Football was definitely the sport for the Collins boy, he had the agility, the speed, and the mindset. He admired that in team members, and sometimes you didn't find that quality on the basketball team. Though, Rylan was pretty sure this would be their best year as well, with the looks of the guys who were filing in the locker room. Shaking thoughts of his own sport from his head, he gazed back out onto the field, watching as Sawyer stepped to the left to avoid the oncoming men, smiling as he shoved them clear out of his path.
A scholarship in the making. He thought, his grin only widening as the boy took off with every last bit of energy he had left. Rylan knew how much energy it took to just run your heart out, and how it felt like the whole world just stopped to watch you breeze on by. That was somewhat how it was with Rylan and Mike, they knew each other and how to get the ball where it needed to be. The ball would be passed to Rylan, and he'd bolt across the half court line, watching Mike and preparing for him to get an empty spot. In one quick movement the ball left his hands and landed in Mike's, then that's about when time stopped. Mike would have been already running at full speed, dodging defensive players, and once the ball touched his fingers, both legs left the ground, completing a spectacular slam-dunk. Now, Rylan watched as Sawyer crossed the line, tossing the ball to the grass. He cheered with the rest of the benched players, nodding lightly with happiness. It was nice seeing the game from off the field, it gave him more of a chance to analyze.
"One hell of a play out there, Collins," He greeted as the boy took a seat next to him, a smile permanently planted on his lips. He adjusted his body to get a better look at him while he was talking, a glance of pity taken to the other 'team' who the coach was now lecturing on how exactly to take the other team down. He shook his head lightly, returning his attention to Sawyer. "Not messy at all, as long as you get the job done," He paused, looking back out at the field. "You guys really seem to connect out there," He commented, his gaze still focused on the field, but he was listening to Sawyer the entire time. |

As a boy handed him a paper cup filled with Gatorade, Sawyer nodded. "Thanks," he said, taking the cup. Immediately, he downed the drink, in a mere two gulps. His energy had been drained by a quarter by now, and it had only been a mere ten minutes into the practice. It was a good thing that the coach gave him a breather. And those freshmen football players that were passing out drinks were handy too. He regulated his breath, shortening them a little. After a few seconds, his heartbeat slowed down close to normal. Sawyer placed the cup between his feet.
You guys really seem to connect out there.
He shook his head. "Thanks. But it can't be messy, man," he said, taking another breath before resuming the talking. "Everything's gotta be exact. If I slip up, I might end up fumbling the football. Then everything's fucked." The swearing showed just how intense he got when it came to football. Unlike most of the people here, he didn't play it for the scholarship. He played it because he /loved/ it. Every carry, every drop of sweat, every tackle, every single bit of it. "You are right about thing though," he said, looking at Rylan. "We do connect pretty well. You can do it too, though." He pointed to the offensive side. "When you're out there, don't mind anything but you and your teammates. It's all about you guys from there. Trust them. Your offensive linemen will protect you. Don't hesitate. That's all there is to it."
Of course, Sawyer knew well how good a basketball player Rylan was. He was in the basketball team too, of course, although he was only the substitute point guard. But whenever he was on the floor along with Rylan, the boy was usually who Sawyer fed the ball to. He always seemed open, always there. Ready to make a play. "Just like basketball. You trust all of us out there too, don't you? Mike, me, everyone else?"

Rylan had to give Sawyer a lot of credit, he played on a lot of the school teams, each energy draining. He'd given up playing football because he'd focused all his energy on basketball, exactly what his father wanted... No, it was exactly what he wanted. He played countless hours in the driveway, just shooting hoops, running fifty meters over again to improve his times. You might call Rylan a dedicated athlete, but he just loved the game. Like Sawyer, Rylan played because he loved the game, and playing because he liked it had made him play better. He wasn't worried about the scholarship, he was just concerned about playing, and playing well. He was the kind of person who enjoyed the work and effort it took, he liked a challenge.
Rylan nodded in agreement, it definitely couldn't be messy. He could remember the coach having to keep the team until eight that night, just working on getting the receiver to keep hold of the ball while running. It happened to take a lot out of his arm, which forced him to have to sit out the next day's practice, but it sure worked. He noticed that this team had gotten their act together, and this year was looking definitely promising. "Hesitation was always a big thing with the guys when I played, I'd go to throw exactly where they should be on the field, but then someone gets in front of them, and they just stop," He said, shaking his head lightly. A lot of guys were like that, they weren't used to just plowing through someone to get to the ball. Rylan could gage where the person would be on the field if they kept up that pace, and he threw accordingly give or take a few steps, but when the person took the long way out of the situation, it got messy. He totally agreed with Sawyer in the mind set where you had to just trust everyone, and keep on going, that's what made a good player and good team.
"I trust you guys with my life," He smiled, shrugging his shoulders. "Well, almost," He added, a teasing tone lurking in his voice. Sure, there was a couple guys that disliked people like Mike, Rylan, and Sawyer, who were the ones that got the most playing time and who actually got along with the coach enough to play a decent game. Rylan believed that you had to have a good relationship with your team off the court before you could play on the court, if you didn't, all the work you'd be spending would be for nothing. You had to know the players inside and out, because that's what made a good team, basketball and football... Any other sport really. |

Hesitation was always a big thing with the guys when I played, I'd go to throw exactly where they should be on the field, but then someone gets in front of them, and they just stop.
He laughed a little. Sawyer used to be taken by Beth to watch Rylan's football games. He was still in middle school back then. Looking back at it now, he completely got what he was talking about. Sawyer shrugged. "Well, it's freshman football, y'know what I mean? Receivers don't have good hands their first year playing." The boy's eyes were fixed on the field, as he analyzed the defense. He was looking for mistakes they made, mistakes he could play to his advantage when it was his snap again. As a linebacker shot through the linemen, Sawyer winced. What happened next was the quarterback being sacked, the ball dropping to the ground. "Ooooh," he cringed, taking a sharp breath of air in. That's going to leave a mark in the morning. The boy cupped his hands around his mouth, about to shout something out. "Cromwell, keep your head up, damnit!"
I trust you guys with my life...well, almost.
A weak grin shaped his mouth. Rylan was one of the good guys, and almost everyone knew that. Ever since Sawyer's older brother died, Rylan had offered his help, at any opportunity possible. Sawyer usually refused kindly, though, being the strong-willed and stubborn boy he was. Besides, he knew the guy probably had his own problems, and that made him all the more admirable. Rylan was almost like a copy of his brother. "Same here, man," he said, his voice a little lower.
"So how's things goin' with you and Beth?" The question was a rare one. He rarely talked to Rylan about Beth. It was no secret to the boy that Rylan had a crush on his sister. Normally, he would be against it at all costs. Sawyer liked absolutely /none/ of his sisters' love interests, much less trusted them. But as mentioned before, he knew damn well that Rylan was a good man. What worried him most was Faiqa Dittono. Beth, Rylan, and Faiqa were best friends, and Sawyer knew that in their own right, Faiqa and Rylan were close too. He wondered whether he had feelings for her too. If that was the case, the boy's opinion about Rylan would falter a little.
But then again, nobody was perfect.

Rylan nodded, which was usually the case with most football teams. Younger players were intimidated by the older, more physically developed ones, which at the moment looked to be only Sawyer at the practice. It took a lot of effort to bulk your body up enough to actually be a decent, effective player. Yet, in his time of playing, he'd seen a couple smaller kids that were able to get a hold of the ball, and just squeeze through everyone. Sure, it was rare, but it happened every so often. Then there were kids like Sawyer, who could just out mind the defender, which was usually the best way to go. Focus quickly returned to the field as the quarterback muffled a groan, remembering exactly how many times that had happened when one of his team members failed to hold them back long enough for the receiver to get a good open spot and for Rylan to throw. "Ouch," Rylan shook his head lightly, watching as the player stumbled to his feet, following the orders of the coach and sat on the bench. The coach brought out a replacement, eyeing Sawyer and Rylan for a minute, but then his attention resumed on the game. Sometimes he did wish he still played, but it wouldn't be the same. He'd never actually loved football back then, but now he enjoyed the frequent pick-up game after school. He wasn't so confident of getting himself involved, however, because it'd been a long time since he'd actually played.
A light, satisfied nod was given as Sawyer said that he'd trust him. In fact, he trusted Sawyer with his life, but some of the guys on the team... Not so much. Rylan had always had a feeling like he had to be there for the Collins family, which is why most of them trusted him. He'd always proved that he'd be willing to help out, though knowing Sawyer, help wasn't needed. He admired the determination in the younger boy, how he wanted to be responsible and protect his family. Rylan had always figured it was just a guy thing, but obviously it was only select individuals, given that his father didn't seem to give a damn about any of the murders and attacks in the past month.
"So, how's things goin' with you and Beth?"
Rylan was surprised to even hear him voice the question, but he pushed the look off his features, glancing toward Sawyer before shrugging. What exactly had he meant by the question? Like, how was their friendship? Well, the answer to that was obviously great. But, did he mean, how was their relationship? If so, Rylan couldn't really give an answer, because he really didn't know himself. "Uh, Good, why?" So, he settled for good. He silently wondered what Beth might have told her younger brother, but quickly shrugged it off. Rylan didn't know anything at this point when it came to relationships, especially his own. |

Sawyer merely grinned at the coach when he looked at the both of them. Eveyone knew that whenever the coach looked at Sawyer, it wasn't because he was in trouble. Sawyer could barely remember the last time the coach even snapped at him about anything. In a game, whenever they'd be losing at halftime, the coach would scream at everybody, but pick out Sawyer as the lone good example out there. It always annoyed him whenever that happened. The boy would sometimes earn the hate of some of his teammates that way. It was no wonder that he didn't make too much friends on the football team, despite his skill. Sawyer's eyes were still fixed on the quarterback, as he got up from the ground, stagerred a bit. The poor boy was obviously banged up from that last tackle. "Let's go, Cromwell!" He figured he might as well give some encouragement to the boy.
Sawyer looked back at Rylan. "You should join the team again," he suggested. From what he watched back then, Rylan wasn't bad at all at the quarterback spot. And that was back when he was a freshman. Everyone knew that the boy had bulked up since then, not being the scrawny figure he once was. "I think you'd make a much better second-stringer than Cromwell here." He looked at him with a smirk on his face. "Maybe even first string." Turning his head to the other side, the boy picked up his cup and spit on it. He absolutely hated the aftertaste that Gatorade left in his mouth.
Uh, Good, why?
He shrugged his shoulders. "Curiosity," he said, at first looking at the players on the field. He looked at Rylan and grinned. He knew damn well Ryan liked Beth, it was the most obvious thing ever. "Just so you know, Beth didn't need to tell me anything before I figured out you liked her. Jesus, you two are always around each other." Sawyer didn't buy into that 'friends' thing at all. The boy leaned back on the upper row of bleachers. "You might as well go and ask her out already."

Rylan too flashed the coach a smile, his eyes lingering on the man for a moment, then moving back to the field. He sure hadn't changed much since he'd been playing, the same old hair, muscular figure, and clothing. Didn't anyone change in this school? Most likely not the teachers, but the students definitely did. However, Rylan was still curios as to why the couch would look back at the two, it wasn't like they were doing anything wrong. It was most likely more of a good reason, because the man scanned the players on the bench, glanced back to Rylan and Sawyer, then returned his attention again on the field. He shook his head, giving up on figuring the coach out. He fooled with the hem of his shirt for a moment or two, watching Cromwell move to the bench, beginning to converse with the coach, then by order he jogged back onto the field. You had to be tough to play football, especially with a coach like this one. Practices were long and hard, but you sure won a large amount of games. A light smile played upon his lips as Sawyer called out a few words of encouragement to the boy, letting out a content sigh.
"Me?" He shook his head lightly, a hand immediately moving to the back of his neck, his thumb caressing the skin for a moment. He listened to what Sawyer had to say, considering his words for a moment, but shrugging his shoulders. "I haven't played football seriously since Freshman year, I'm not really in that kind of shape to play," He said, though didn't believe his own words. Rylan was in the best shape of his life, there was no reason he couldn't handle basketball and football, Sawyer did it and even more. "I'll have to think about it," He added, grinning. It might be nice to get back on the team, after all, he did miss playing.
Another light nod was given to Sawyer's words, focus still on the players on the field. His gaze traveled quickly back to Sawyer as the conversation continued, he too curios to what the boy had to say. "It's that obvious?" He questioned, holding back another smile. There was no doubt he liked Beth, but then there was Faiqa. Honestly, it was all too confusing for him to even consider making a decision. "You really think so? I mean, we've never been anything but just friends, What if..." He broke off, his gaze moving to his hands. What if she didn't like him back? That was the question he'd almost asked, but there was definitely something there. That kiss hadn't exactly been one a friend might give, it was one with a much higher intensity. But the real question was how or if he'd go through with it. |

I haven't played football seriously since Freshman year, I'm not really in that kind of shape to play.
"Oh, bullshit," he said, shaking his head with a grin on his face. Rylan was one of the most athletic guys in school, being one of the basketball stars on the team. "You think you're not in shape, hell, then half the guys out there on the field shouldn't be there then." It was true. One of the reasons why Sawyer had an easy time getting away after he got past the linebackers was because the secondary backs, who were supposed to be after the linebackers, weren't conditioned well enough. It was different playing on a real game; the secondary of the other team was much faster. Sawyer didn't think for one second that maybe it was just because he was literally the fastest guy in the school. The boy was in the track team as well.
I'll have to think about it.
"Great," he said, clapping his hands once, as he leaned forward. The boy turned his face back to the field, as he watched Cromwell complete a mere two yard pass. That was what-- his third completion out of twelve pass attempts? Sawyer eased up a little on the criticism. The boy was only a sophomore, after all. Besides, he was only the second string quarterback. He clapped a few times. "There we go, nice pass!" Leaning back again, he glanced at Rylan. "Seriously, man, we'd make one helluva team out there."
You really think so? I mean, we've never been anything but just friends, What if...
He laughed at the question of how obvious Rylan's feelings were. "As obvious as it can get, man," he said, shaking his head. The boy listened to him go on, and furrowed his eyebrows in curiousity as the words stopped. Sawyer sighed softly. "What if what? She doesn't like you the same way?" He shook his head again. "Nah, man...she's always talking about you, for chrissake." His eyebrows turned his expression into something a little more skeptical. "Are you sure it's that? It's not because of something else, is it? Or someone, you know-- I mean, nothing's swaying your decision, is there?" He was fishing, of course. The boy already knew a little bit about the Faiqa part, although he wasn't too sure of it.

A light smile played on his lips at Sawyer's words, confirming his earlier idea that the boy was hard to fool. He noticed a lot of things most people didn't, and he picked up on things that you could only feel, not see. "You think you're not in shape, hell, then half the guys out there on the field shouldn't be there then." He laughed, shaking his head in amusement. It was true, Rylan had always been a very athletic guy, but only because of all the work he put into things. He was a dedicated person with just about everything he did. He'd always been a determined child, whatever he set his mind on, he accomplished. A lot of people knew that about him, and at times took advantage of that, and gave him something to do just to get it done.
Rylan really would think about it, because he thought he could use the extra exercise. He had a strict system to keep in shape, run in the early morning, shoot hoops late morning, take a break, then maybe catch a pick-up game of basketball at the country club. It would be good to have something to crowd his schedule even more, even if it meant pushing himself to get there. He loved the energy exertion, so playing football would just be another notch on his daily belt. However, would that mean less time to spend with friends? especially with Joie being pregnant, he'd have to be there for her every step of the way. He hadn't gotten a call yet from the girl about how it had gone with Mike, and that conversation he was interested in hearing about. Rylan shoved the thoughts from his mind, giving a couple encouraging shouts to the players on the field. A light nod was given to Sawyer at his comment, a smile forming. "Yeah, I suppose we would."
He shook his head, laughing again. Rylan wasn't always the greatest at hiding things, and it obviously showed through as Sawyer picked up on it. He was kind of glad to get it off his chest, but it wasn't totally off, there was much more to tell. Another nod was given as the boy finished Rylan's sentence, inhaling a large amount of air in one deep breath. He was definitely stuck in some kind of jumble, something he knew he couldn't possibly talk to Sawyer about. After all, one of those girls was his sister, obviously he'd want him to choose his sister over the other girl. Yet, even if he went to someone else for advice, how did he know they'd be right? What if he chose one, and felt like it was the wrong choice? He couldn't do that to them, not now, when they both needed the comfort he was scrambling to give. "I don't know," He said simply, a hand moving self-consciously to his jaw. Life wasn't easy, it wouldn't ever be. |

Yeah, I suppose we would.
"The way I see it..." he said, taking another cup of Gatorade from one of the waterboys offering it. "Somebody's gotta make this team look decent at least. Might as well be us." Truth be told, Sawyer wasn't too into all the glory and razzle dazzle that came with scoring touchdowns, or winning games. The boy was simply competitive simply as hell. That was his mindset. Be all you can be. Seize the opportunity. And it showed everywhere, too. The boy thought that life was much too short to waste his time just sitting around-- the death of his brother taught him that. His brother had also taught him to be confident, because whenever something goes wrong, the only one he could depend on, was himself.
As the coach called the second string running back out of the field, Sawyer stood, putting his helmet over his head, about to slip it on. He assumed the breather that the old man just gave him was over. Instead, the coach shook his head. "Let the kids get some snap time. You don't need to be out there," the coach said, as he pulled another young player to go out there. Sitting back on the bleacher, Sawyer sighed. He'd much rather be playing out there than sitting here watching the offense get stomped over. But then again, the young guys needed the practice anyway. He decided it would probably help the team if they did get a few more snaps. He turned his attention back to Rylan.
I don't know.
He shook his head, with a small grin coming to his lips. "At least you're not rushing," he commented, tilting his head up. The clouds were so dark, it looked like it was about to rain. If it did, it was going to be one messy practice, seeing as the team struggled enough playing with perfect weather. "It's probably better not to ask her out than go ahead without being sure anyway," he said, as an afterthought. He wondered how Beth would handle it if Rylan never acted on what he had with her.

Rylan glanced to Sawyer, waiting for him to continue. One of the boys filled a cup of Gatorade and offered Rylan a cup, but he shook his head and politely said a 'no thank you'. His attention returned to the boy beside him, nodding once more at his words. "Hey, give number 92 some credit, he's trying," He said, his tone a bit on the joking side. Yet, the running back was trying his best, and was now plowing down the field, a second too late to catch the ball the quarterback just threw. "But, the entire team has to make the team look decent," He pointed out, hinting on the team effort part of the ordeal. He was pretty sure Sawyer knew of it, because he played like it, and talked like he knew. For example, if your linemen couldn't put up a good fight, you have no team.
As Sawyer stood, he looked toward the boy, giving him a reassuring smile, even though he really didn't need it. He hadn't exactly expected for the coach to give Sawyer that long of a breather, but he figured he was just saving him until he really needed him. Once the coach spoke, he glanced up to the boy, a look of surprise lingering on his features. It was unlike the coach to give anyone a breather at all, for he frequently just had everyone go through a series of drills, then ended the day with a quick game. Though, he usually had a couple games going at one time, but with a smaller amount of people. "That's a first," He mumbled, shaking his head, slightly amused. If he were in Sawyer's position, he definitely would prefer to be on the field than watching everyone else play, and by the look on his face, he knew he'd guessed right.
Rylan shrugged, biting his lower lip as he continued to think the thoughts that he'd been trying to escape for the past couple days, even weeks now. He followed the other boy's gaze, grimacing at the sight of the dark sky. It definitely looked like it was going to rain, and honestly, he wouldn't mind at all, it being so hot. Though, the players wouldn't be too happy when everything got messy, so he reluctantly willed the clouds away. "I suppose," He replied simply, running over several more questions in his mind. She could have any guy she really wanted, so would she be there if he waited? But, contradicting questions soon followed, and he sighed. You can't choose who you love, but what happens when it happens to be not one, but two people? |
